Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841. Eduard Bauernfeld, Austrian dramatist, was born in Vienna. Nathaniel Greene (1797-1877) was an American newspaper editor, Boston postmaster, and a writer who often used the name "Boscowen."
